Mr. Aftab ul Islam is the President of American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Bangladesh, which he assumed in 2001 till 2005.
Academic Profile: Mr. Islam, son of Mr. Tajul Islam, was born on November 18, 1950 in Comilla. He graduated first in commerce and then in law. Later he went on to be a Chartered Accountant and a fellow of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh.
Professional Career:Mr. Islam began his career in NCR Corporation, a US-based multinational IT giant, in 1976 and worked his way up to become first Bangladesh-born Country Manager (CEO) for its operation in Bangladesh. In 1992, Mr. Islam launched his own business, International Office Equipment (IOE), after the NCR closed down its direct operation in Bangladesh. Mr. Islam is the Chairman of IIT Bangladesh Ltd., an institute that grooms IT professionals; Impact PR, Bangladesh’s first institutional public relations agency; Sr. Vice-Chairman of Asia-Pacific General Insurance Company Ltd., and a Director of ATAZ Bangladesh Ltd., a joint venture Management Consultancy firm with American counterpart.
Position In Trade Bodies: With his spectacular achievement in the IT and office automation business, Mr. Islam was elected President of the Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) and he is still widely recognised at home and abroad for persuading the government into using information technology for efficiency and competitiveness and making computer products duty free for its wider usage. He was instrumental in setting up the BCS Computer City at the IDB Bhaban, paving the way for harnessing the immense potential of the IT sector. He was elected President of the country’s premier chamber, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), on the back of his positive contribution in the ICT sector. During his stint with the DCCI, he infused dynamism into this leading chamber body of the country and helped it live up to the business challenges of the new millennium. In the year 2001, Mr. Islam was elected to become the first-ever non-American President to lead the prestigious forum of American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham), which works to promote trade and economic
cooperation between US and Bangladesh. He has been instrumental in attracting several foreign direct investment (FDI) in Bangladesh. During his tenure with the AmCham, he proactively promoted Bangladesh’s image through participating in different international forums as part of Bangladesh government delegations. Elected as Director the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), the apex trade body of Bangladesh, for the period of 2005-2007.
Training Abroad: Mr. Islam attended various professional and management training courses in the US, UK, Brazil, Australia, Japan, Cyprus, Belgium, Bahrain, Egypt, South Korea, Pakistan and the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore.
Awards & Recognition: He is the recipient of a number of achievement awards of national and international repute.
Civic & Social Activity: Mr. Islam holds membership with most of the prominent clubs including Kurmitola Golf Club and Dhaka Club Ltd. He is an active Rotarian and was President of the Rotary Club of Dhaka North during 1992-93 under Rotary International Dist-3280 Bangladesh. He has been elected as Vice President of Fair Election Monitoring Alliance (FEMA) and also nominated the member of the Board of Governor of Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is a member of Eisenhower Fellowship Nominating Committee Bangladesh and also life member of Assistance for Blind Children (ABC).
