UAE based business conglomerate Abu Dhabi Group (also known as Dhabi Group) has recently expressed their interest to invest in energy sector of Bangladesh among other investment proposals. In a formal letter addressed to BoI executive chairman, the group has sought support from BoI and other government body for investment in energy, hospitality, and real-estate sector.

A team representing Dhabi Group, led by Amjad Awan, energy consultant of the group, and Muneer Farooqui, CEO of Warid Telecom, met Nazrul Islam, executive chairman of BoI in his office recently. The team discussed ways of investments in energy sector, prospect, and issues of bilateral interest.

The team also visited AKM Zafarullah Khan, secretary of power division, AMM Nasiruddin, secretary of energy division, and Tapan Chowdhury, advisor to power and energy ministries. Later they also visited various power plants, and probable locations and facilities to assess upcoming projects. Dhabi Group’s chief executive Bashir A Tahir in the formal letter also requested the government through BoI to join in its consortium as an equity partner in the proposed project by providing land and other facilities.

It is worth noting that in 2005, the group’s chairman Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, a member of the Royal family of the UAE and the current minister of education, science and technology of the UAE, signed a MoU with BoI for a total investment of $1 billion.
